University North Park Project Area Update

Norman City Council members received favorable news at the council's study session concerning the University North Park Project Area and its effect on the city's retail sales and strong sales tax growth. The city's retail trade pull factor has improved considerably since 2004, allowing the project to expand.

The Journal Record names winners of 2009 Innovator of the Year awards

More than 30 entities representing a wide variety of industries, from architecture and agricultural to e-commerce and energy, received special recognition at The Journal Record’s annual celebration of business innovation scheduled on March 12 at the Renaissance Tulsa Hotel and Convention Center. Several of the Innovator of the Year award winners for 2009 are Merchant Metrix, Inc. and Center for the Creation of Economic Wealth (CCEW). Merchant Metrix, Inc. and CCEW are tenants in NEDC’s technology based incubator, eTec.

When Lightning Strikes, Weather Decision Technologies Helps Norman Public Schools Stay Safe

Weather Decision Technologies, Inc. (WDT) is helping Norman Public Schools (NPS) keep children safe using its cutting-edge Lightning Decision Support System™ (LDSS) for advanced severe weather warnings and its iMapWeather™ interactive weather map. The new systems went live at each of the 22 schools in the NPS system this month, offering the schools their own custom LDSS warning, based on the precise latitude and longitude of each of the schools across the Norman school district.

Mail must get through

Two decades ago this month, the United States Postal System opened its 72-acre National Center for Employee Development east of 24th Avenue SE on SH 9 in Norman. It's grown to about 500,000 square feet of office and training space in addition to a 445,000-square-foot housing facility -- and with close to 1,000 smoke-free guest rooms is the largest hotel in Oklahoma. NCED also contains classrooms, labs, conferencing, housing, food, fitness and health facilities.

Riverwind Casino to open hotel in February

The Hotel at Riverwind, 30 feet from the Riverwind Casino entrance, is slated to open this February. The hotel will offer guests a place to unwind in a soothing and relaxing environment.

A decade of design

Mister Robert Fine Furniture and Design recently celebrated its second half-century. Mister Robert started out as a modest Norman furniture store that now serves clients throughout Oklahoma, Texas and even globally. Mister Robert is located at 109 W. main St. in downtown Norman.

Main Street makeover

Merchants and business owners planted along Main Street like the way downtown Norman has shaped up in recent years, thanks to a revitalization project. New sidewalks, additional lighting and parking have brought more customers into the area. Downtown Norman is turning into a great place to visit.

NRHS receives healthy business award

Norman Regional Health System recently received the 2008 Certificate of Excellence from the Oklahoma Certified Healthy Business Program. President and Chief Executive Officer David Whitaker accepted the award.
